Prayer of Commitment - LESSONS IN PRAYER

I am a House of Prayer.

I always pray.

I do not turn coward and faint and lose heart and give

I watch and pray that I may not enter into temptation,

for my spirit is willing but my flesh is week.

I pray with my spirit and I pray with my mind and

understanding also.

I always maintain the habit of prayer.

I am both alert and thankful as I pray.

Encouragement for your personal life and the exciting results that will follow:

Prayer does not begin as a great burning of prayer. It begins as a flicker. Then as you fan these first little flames by giving attention to it and actually praying, it grows. That tiny seed of desire of initial desire is your cue from the Holy Spirit about the direction He wants to take you in your prayers.

Each time you lift up a prayer, a request to God, He will move on your heart, and the desire to see that prayer answered will grow stronger.

One thing that you must remember as your desire in prayer grows, is that you are not praying to get God to do something. No! God is teaching you to pray so that He can do something!

If you will always remember that, your faith will stay strong.

Fasting - Why Fast?

Why fast?

In Matthew 6, Jesus provided the pattern by which each of us should live as a child of God. He addresses three specific duties of a Christian: giving, praying and fasting. Jesus said: ‘When you give…when you pray…when you fast.’ He made it clear that fasting, like giving and praying, was a normal part of Christian life.

Jesus also taught His disciples in Matthew 17: 20+21: “... this kind goes not out but by prayer and fasting”. Lets read …

Matthew 17:20-21 NKJV

20 So Jesus said to them, "… assuredly, I say to you, if you have faith as a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, 'Move from here to there,' and it will move; and nothing will be impossible for you. 21 However, this kind does not go out except by prayer and fasting."

Jesus Himself fasted and prayed because He knew there were some supernatural things that could only be released that way.

As a church, we are fasting for 8 days.

We are recommending a partial fast like that in Daniel 10 where he took no sweets, no meat and no wine. You could fast caffeine as well. He had a specific purpose for fasting and praying and at the end he received his answer.

More about Daniel later!

So then,

  • Fasting can enable you to become an overcomer
  • Increase your faith
  • Accomplish great things in the lives of others
  • Strengthen you spiritually

Every fast must have a purpose and an expected result. What is the purpose of our fast as a church!

1. Breakthrough for people in our spiritual family

Isaiah 58 reveals God’s purpose to fast.

Isaiah 58:6-11 NKJV

6 "Is this not the fast that I have chosen: To loose the bonds of wickedness, To undo the heavy burdens, To let the oppressed go free, And that you break every yoke?

7 Is it not to share your bread with the hungry, And that you bring to your house the poor who are cast out; When you see the naked, that you cover him, And not hide yourself from your own flesh?

8 Then your light shall break forth like the morning, Your healing shall spring forth speedily, And your righteousness shall go before you; The glory of the Lord shall be your rear guard.

9 Then you shall call, and the Lord will answer; You shall cry, and He will say,  'Here I am.'

"If you take away the yoke from your midst, The pointing of the finger, and speaking wickedness,

10 If you extend your soul to the hungry, And satisfy the afflicted soul, Then your light shall dawn in the darkness, And your darkness shall be as the noonday.

11 The Lord will guide you continually, And satisfy your soul in drought, And strengthen your bones; You shall be like a watered garden, And like a spring of water, whose waters do not fail.

2. Every partner or member of our spiritual community to function accurately in their gifting and experience revelation from the Lord about individual life assignment

Acts 9:6-9 NKJV

6 So he, trembling and astonished, said, "Lord, what do You want me to do?" Then the Lord said to him,  "Arise and go into the city, and you will be told what you must do."

7 And the men who journeyed with him stood speechless, hearing a voice but seeing no one.

8 Then Saul arose from the ground, and when his eyes were opened he saw no one. But they led him by the hand and brought him into Damascus. 9 And he was three days without sight, and neither ate nor drank.

Paul fasted and prayed for three days – verses 9 and 11 - see verse 11 below.

Versus 15 and 16 show impartation of life assignment and direction for Paul in through this time of prayer and fasting

Acts 9:10-16 NKJV

10 Now there was a certain disciple at Damascus named Ananias; and to him the Lord said in a vision, "Ananias." And he said, "Here I am, Lord."

11 So the Lord said to him, "Arise and go to the street called Straight, and inquire at the house of Judas for one called Saul of Tarsus, for behold, he is praying.

12 And in a vision he has seen a man named Ananias coming in and putting his hand on him, so that he might receive his sight."

13 Then Ananias answered, "Lord, I have heard from many about this man, how much harm he has done to Your saints in Jerusalem.

14 And here he has authority from the chief priests to bind all who call on Your name."

15 But the Lord said to him, "Go, for he is a chosen vessel of Mine to bear My name before Gentiles, kings, and the children of Israel.

16 For I will show him how many things he must suffer for My name's sake."

Paul heard things and saw things in the spirit because he chose to fast and pray.

Now let’s see what Daniel experienced because of his choice to fast and pray!

Daniel chose to fast for three weeks – Daniel chose! He saw things in the spirit others did not! Daniel also had a personal experience with the very presence of God that others did not! Daniel set his heart towards God with the expression of fasting.

Daniel 10:2-3 NKJV

2 In those days I, Daniel, was mourning three full weeks. 3 I ate no pleasant food, no meat or wine came into my mouth, nor did I anoint myself at all, till three whole weeks were fulfilled.

Daniel 10:7-8

7 And I, Daniel, alone saw the vision, for the men who were with me did not see the vision; but a great terror fell upon them, so that they fled to hide themselves. 8 Therefore I was left alone when I saw this great vision,

Daniel 10:10-12

10 Suddenly, a hand touched me, which made me tremble on my knees and on the palms of my hands.

11 And he said to me, "O Daniel, man greatly beloved, understand the words that I speak to you, and stand upright, for I have now been sent to you." While he was speaking this word to me, I stood trembling.

12 Then he said to me, "Do not fear, Daniel, for from the first day that you set your heart to understand, and to humble yourself before your God, your words were heard; and I have come because of your words.

Romans 12:1-6 NKJV

12 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service.

2 And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.

3 For I say, through the grace given to me, to everyone who is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think soberly, as God has dealt to each one a measure of faith.

4 For as we have many members in one body, but all the members do not have the same function,

5 so we, being many, are one body in Christ, and individually members of one another. 6 Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us, let us use them:

For those who are going to work every day and are not able to pray as much during working hours — just remember that FASTING ITSELF IS A CONTINUAL PRAYER BEFORE GOD. There may be times when it is easier to pray than at other times.

Don’t condemn yourself and quit.

God sees your sacrifice.

Spend time in the morning before work in prayer and the word and then again in the evenings after work.

Quit watching television as much as possible during this time as well.

What results can we expect from our fast?

  • Fasting will help you to be more sensitive to the voice of His Spirit.
  • Fasting and praying will help to break poverty from your life.

In the book of Joel 2: 15,16, the people were so poor and in such famine and God said to: “…sanctify a fast and call an assembly”. After the fast, the threshing floor was full of wheat, the oil vats were overflowing, and they ate in plenty and were satisfied! This does not mean that you fast a few days and then fall into wealth the next, but it does mean that when you begin to honour God with fasting and praying and giving as a lifestyle, you will see for yourself that it is directly linked to poverty being removed.

  • Health and healing also follows fasting. Isaiah 58: 8
  • Fasting and praying  will also help you overcome sexual addictions, drug and alcohol addictions and demonic powers and bondage.

In Judges chapters 20+ 21 there is an account of men in the city that had become wicked and delighted in lewd homosexual acts. God sent a prophet Phineas with a message to fast and pray and the result was that the homosexual spirit’s power was broken and defeated!

  • Clarity for your Assignment comes through prayer and fasting.

Paul was fasting when God called him and shared the assignment for his life (See Acts 9 again! Also, Peter was fasting on the rooftop when God gave him a new revelation and direction to take the Gospel to the Gentiles Acts 10).

  • Fasting prepares the way for God to give you fresh revelation, fresh vision, fresh purpose and direction.
  • God will also target your children who are being deceived, ensnared and led off by the enemy’s devices.

In the book of Joel, God called for a fast and promised that afterwards He would poor out of His Spirit and our sons and our daughters will prophesy!

Many times the rewards of fasting and praying come AFTER the fast, though from time to time answers and results will come during the fast.

There is power in corporate fasting, praying and praise!

It creates a river of healing, of deliverance and victory and cleansing in the household of God! Study Jehosaphat and the people of God’s fast and victory that followed in 2 Chronicles 20

Corporate fasting and prayer releases things for our little ones and the right way for us to go and for all our substance! See Ezra 8: 21-23

Study Isaiah 58 and see that when you fast and pray it will cause you to go to places you have never been before and you will do things you have never done before!

A few practical considerations -

Your body may experience some detox symptoms, don’t’ quit!

Don’t try and fast for 8 days – fast for one day 8 times

Review your activities for the next 8 days and balance your food intake and your work and prayer routines.

Do not continue exercise in the fast time.

Fasting is a physical discipline – consult your doctor if you have any physical issues.

Focus on the spiritual reasons for the fast.

Record the things that you are wanting to fast and pray about personally.

In conclusion:

If you are serious enough about the personal and social tasks before you as a Christian to take up the discipline of fasting, you can expect resistance, interference and opposition. Remember that you are deciding to advance in your spiritual journey and gain ground for the Kingdom of God. That necessitates taking ground from the enemy of God – and no great movement of the Holy Spirit and the Church of God goes unchallenged.

May our fasting Glorify God and realize answers to our prayers.

Prayer for your city

Psalms 127:1, 2 “… except the Lord Keep a City…”

Deuteronomy 2:36 “… there is no city too high or too strong for us, the Lord our God delivers all to us!”

Proverbs 11:11 “By the blessing and influence of the upright the city is exalted, but it is not overthrown by the wicked.”

Prayers for Believers in the local body

These are Holy Spirit inspired prayers that Paul prayed for the believers in the Church. These prayers are spiritual, timeless and have been given to us by the Spirit of God to pray today.

Ephesians 1:16-21, “ I Cease not to give thanks to you, making mention of you in my prayers: That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him: The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of His calling, and what the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints, and what is the exceeding greatness of His power to us-ward who believe, according to the working of His mighty power, which he wrought in Christ, when He raised Him from the dead, and set Him at His own right hand in the Heavenly places, far above all principality, and power, and might, and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this world, but also in that which is to come.”

Prayers for the Pastor

1 Thessalonians 5:12-13, “Honor those who are your leaders in the Lord's work. They work hard among you and warn you against all that is wrong. Think highly of them and give them your wholehearted love because of their work.”

Praying is one of the highest forms of honor that we can show to our Pastor.

Romans 15:30, “I urge you brothers by our Lord Jesus Christ and by the love of the Spirit, to join me in the struggle, by praying to God for me.”

Prayers for the Local Church

Ephesians 4:11-13 “And He Himself gave some to the apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers, for the equipping of the saints for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ, until we all come to the unity of the faith and the knowledge of the Son of God, to a perfect man, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ.”

Prayers for kings and all those in authority

1 Timothy 2:2 “For kings and all who are in authority, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and reverence.”

  • Whatever happens in our nation will affect us.
  • Prayer gives God the opportunity to change things because we ask Him.
  • Ask for wisdom and understanding for our leaders.
  • Ask God to send godly men over their paths.

Servants Prayer Book - PRAYER FOR ALL MEN

Prayer for all men

  • A believer's prayer life should be based upon the  Word of God.
  • Faith begins were the will of God is know.
  • Decide what you want from God and find the scripture that promises the things that you are asking for.
  • Believe that you have received the answer and visualize it.
  • Offer up thanksgiving to God.
  • Pray with your understanding and pray in the Holy Spirit.
  • We pray because we are one with Jesus, the great Intercessor.

1 Timothy 2: 1-4 “Therefore I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men, for kings and all who are in authority, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and reverence. For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God or Saviour, who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.”
